Roadmap

Remember, this is not a Feature Wishlist. Minor changes or detailed explanation should be written down there, this is for discussion about priorities of the major proposed features.

Main Issues

  1. Do a maintenance release.
  2. Switch to a better SCM tool, probably Subversion.
  3. Repackaging: Either the basic package should include some useful macros or an optional package should be provided. Just as binaries from nedit.org are the recommended way to use NEdit, this should not be left to others. See SF#1600102
  4. Do a feature release.
  5. Architecture Cleanup: Fundamental: Requirement for some of the more useful patches, and just plain the right thing to do.
  6. New Settings System, Internals: Fundamental: You want to do this before you muck around in NEdit's internals even more.
  7. New Settings System, Widget: The current system is seriously overextended.
  8. Better Macro Distribution: You Can Do many things With A Macro, but macros are pretty hard to get and to install. This has to change.
  9. Unified Binary: Get rid of nc.
  10. Do a feature release.
  11. Unicode support: UTF-8 is not a silly new fad, it is gaining ground fast because it is the first time character sets have been done right. At some point NEdit needs to comply.
  12. i18n: Best be done in some standard way, like Xlib/Xt. Beyond that, we'd either need a LGPLed or BSDed lib or do it ourself.
  13. Leaving Motif: Nice dream, but that would probably be more work than to start from scratch. As an alternative, a prototype could be done to learn about the issues and after that we should try to built everything as toolkit-agnostic as possible.

Major Features

Not necessarily less important, but probably more isolated than any of the above. Thus, they can be done without much planning.

  • Folding: Just a very, very useful major feature.
