Better Binaries

While the official NEdit site's download pages offer binaries for all sorts of OSes, some of these binaries have been built using version 1 of the Motif libraries, so as to maximize backward-compatibility. An unfortunate side-effect of this is an NEdit interface that is far uglier than necessary! (Notice that the following does not apply for Open Source operating systems like Linux, BSD or Mac OS/X and recall that it is strongly advised not to use Open Motif 2.2 or some unknown LessTif versions; see the file check_lin_tif.c for more info. If you use the real OSF Motif like in the examples below, there is no problem.)

Of course the best solution is to build your own binaries, using the most recent version (2.1) of Motif. For less Unix-savvy users, the third option is to download binaries from "porting" sites such as those below, which offer binaries built for a particular OS, and which tend to use current Motif libraries when building same:

  • For Sun machines, the SunFreeware.com site has created NEdit 5.4 binaries for Sparc/Solaris versions 2.5, 2.6, 7, 8, and 9, as well as for Intel/Solaris versions 8 and 9. These binaries are all believed to have been built using Motif 2.1. The Sun Freeware folks have not yet generated binaries for version 5.5, though they do accept suggestions...  :-)
